Footings and Foundations

April 29th 2014: I borrowed an electric jack hammer from Anatoli Guberman who lives in the valley along the Willow Creek. He has been breaking out tons of rock on his land. The hammer was a great help in getting the rock broken up so I could get holes dug for the four piers to support the shed. Pier number one is in and it sets the level against which the others will be established.

April 29th 2014: Pier number one can now be used to establish the position and height of pier number two.

April 30th 2014: It took most of the day getting the rock busted out for pier number two. And then there was a struggle to get the concrete mixed and poured around the metal support and then waiting for it to set. Getting the vertical position settled was a challenge as well. The beam had to be placed in the metal support post that stood in the wet concrete. I had to create a support 'block' of stones to hold the beam's weight off the support while the concrete hardened.

May 1st 2014: After two days of distraction for other things needing to be done like food shopping and material buying, I was able to get back to doing the third pier.

The jack hammer made quick work of the hole for pier #3. But the cleanup and positioning of the form was another matter. I had to piece together a form from the remains of one used one and one good one. The height of pier #3 was the tallest and exceeded the standard height I had bought. Oh joy!

May 2nd 2014: I finally got pier #3 formed and poured. It was somewhat easier to get level. I mixed the concrete a bit stiffer (less water) in order to get it to set more quickly. I braced the mold from all directions to keep it from tipping to one side.

May 2nd 2014: Pier #3 from the eastern side. Greg had come and moved the big trailer away and down to the main driveway pad. This made the work on #3 a lot easier. Thanks again Greg!

May 4th 2014: A day off for other work and then I did Pier #4, the last. For some reason, it went easier than I imagined it would.

May 5th 2014: With the concrete dry and the beams level, I was able to start the floor joists.
