I often go 'over the line' to Medford, Ashland and Grant's Pass in Oregon for building supplies. Sometimes the items are simply not available on short notice in the Yreka area. Sometimes the prices are lower in Oregon. The lack of a sales tax in Oregon is illusory. California law requires you to report sales tax on items you 'import' to California from neighboring states.
I buy a lot of lumber, paint, hardware and some tools from Home Depot. The sales tax is included whenever I ask Home Depot to deliver the items to California, which is most of the time. I keep those receipts as proof of paid sales tax. The receipt is required to be shown at the inspection stations when you bring the items into California. It is not always asked for, but still - you are warned!

The Home Depot has a wide selection of supplies and sells at moderate to low prices. I always comparison shop. I check selection, models, reliability and prices. Home Depot usually beats any other supplier on lumber, and hardware.
